Agroforestry systems respect the environment and guarantee food security through the diversification of production operations and the income they generate, and are thus a promising sustainable development model for the countries in the global South that are most vulnerable to global change. However, such systems can only be optimized by understanding and mastering production factors.

This e-book presents a range of knowledge obtained recently of the biophysical and socioeconomic mechanisms behind the functioning and dynamics of agroforestry systems. It concerns systems based on tree crops such as cocoa and coffee in humid tropical regions of South America and East and Central Africa, and wooded and bush parks based on food crops, primarily cereals, in the semi-arid sub-Saharan region of West Africa.

It summarizes the last progress made via several projects involving CIRAD, IRD and their partners in the global South, conducted in the above regions between 2012 and 2016. These projects centred on the dynamics of agroforestry systems and the compromises between production services and other ecosystem services that such systems allow.
