CIRAD gives its partners access to genetic resources for varietal improvement purposes, and to new, high-performance sugarcane varieties for industrial-scale cultivation. The planting material is generally transferred from one place to another in the form of cuttings, hence a high risk of spreading pests and diseases. The quarantine service offered by CIRAD serves to eliminate that risk.

Features

  • CIRAD's quarantine facility is in Montpellier (France), outside the usual sugarcane cultivation zone.
  • Varieties spend at least two years in quarantine.
  • Sugarcane pathogens, primarily viruses and bacteria, are detected during quarantine.
  • The planting material is decontaminated.
  • Healthy varieties are transferred.

Services

The CIRAD sugarcane quarantine service is part of a plant pathology research laboratory.
