- Developing sustainable coffee and cocoa sectors through a geographical indicator approach in Indonesia
Towards the development of sustainable coffee and cocoa sectors through a geographical indicator approach and better pest and disease management in Indonesia
Two pests, the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) and the cocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramerella), are affecting coffee and cocoa crops respectively. A thesis is currently ongoing to improve the management of the coffee berry borer, under the joint supervision of IBP at Bogor University and CIRAD. Similar work should be carried out on cocoa od borer in order to limit losses due to this pest. Participatory selection work should be carried out to exploit the avenues already explored to improve resistance. With better management of these pests, it will be possible to develop a territorial approach to consolidate coffee GIs and develop geographical indications for cocoa.
