KAP-Rabies project: One Health Rabies training for 125 human and animal healthcare workers in Cambodia

On 20-21 March, in Svay Rieng, Cambodia, as part of the Knowledge Attitude Practice - Rabies (KAP-Rabies) project, 125 human and animal healthcare workers underwent a rabies training, organized by CIRAD, the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC), the Communicable Disease Control Department of the Ministry of Health (CDC-MoH), and the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (GDAHP-MAFF).

A two-day training on rabies reunited 61 human healthcare workers and 64 animal healthcare workers from Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia. The training was organized by CIRAD, the Institut Pasteur du Cambodge (IPC), the Communicable Disease Control Department of the Ministry of Health (CDC-MoH) and the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (GDAHP-MAFF)

The training was implemented as part of the Knowledge Attitude Practice - Rabies (KAP-Rabies) project, funded by the French Embassy in Cambodia through the Fonds Equipe France (FEF), formerly the Solidarity Funds for Innovative Projects (FSPI) of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

The opening remarks were provided by the deputy director of IPC, of the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of MAFF, of the provincial health department of Svay Rieng, of the surveillance and control of zoonotic diseases office of GDAHP MAFF and of CDC MoH. 

Trainers from CDC-MoH, GDAHP-MAFF, Calmette Hospital, and the Rabies Prevention Center and Epidemiology and Public Health Unit of IPC covered a range of topics, including:

  • rabies epidemiology
  • post-exposure prophylaxis in humans
  • management of rabies in humans
  • vaccination of dogs
  • management of biting dogs
  • integrated bite management and surveillance

...as well as a presentation of the KAP-Rabies national survey on knowledge, attitudes and practices of healthcare workers.

The training was also a great occasion for healthcare workers of animal and human sectors of Svay Rieng to meet, work together in intersectorial groups to discuss rabies scenarios and share points of views.
