Animal production

Satisfying growing demand for animal protein in developing countries is a major challenge for the coming twenty years. However, animal production uses large amounts of agricultural land and biomass. Should demand be managed on a global level? The issues vary from one species to another, but they raise a certain number of general questions that CIRAD is working to solve.

Scientific websites

Africa-Milk project
Africa-Milk supports the co-design and application of technical, organizational and institutional innovations aimed at boosting and securing local milk supplies in two ways: ecological intensification of milk production and development of inclusive dairy basins.

STRADIV project
The STRADIV project aims to build a multidisciplinary toolkit on plant diversity within agrosystems, to support their transition to ecologically intensive systems and define generic rules.

TEMPO project - remote sensing and spatial modelling of animal mobility
This projet, funded by MUSE (Montpellier University of Excellence), aims to use Earth observation data to model landscape use by wildlife and domestic animal populations, to better characterize contacts and what determines those contacts at wildlife/domestic animal interfaces and estimate the risk of pathogen transmission.

MALIN project
The MALIN collaborative project aims to improve infectious human, animal and plant disease control in Guadeloupe and the rest of the Caribbean. It associates a range of organizations in Guadeloupe involved in understanding, monitoring and controlling those diseases, and relies on a multidisciplinary approach that combines microbiology, epidemiology, entomology and socioeconomics.

European reference laboratory for PPR
In February 2017, CIRAD was designated EU reference laboratory for peste des petits ruminants. Its website offers European laboratories background information on the disease.
