Sistemas y políticas de innovación para el sector agropecuario en América Latina

Just out 20 December 2019
A two-year project (Polinco) on agricultural innovation policies in Latin America used nine national case studies in Latin America to analyse the innovation processes generated by scientific and technological institutions. The resulting book, Sistemas y políticas de innovación para el sector agropecuario en América Latina, deciphers the role of international institutions in drafting regional agendas and the capacity of the private sector to transform production and consumption practices.

Innovation is a keyword for policies and public action as regards the agricultural sector. Scientific and technological institutions and agricultural development services are required to steer technological, economic and social transitions and work with various stakeholders to generate innovations capable of tackling the main challenges of today.

The book Sistemas y políticas de innovación para el sector agropecuario en América Latina recounts a series of analyses of such processes in Latin America, based on case studies in nine countries in the region: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Uruguay. It debates the role of international institutions such as FAO and IICA in drafting the regional agricultural innovation agenda, and the capacity of the private sector to transform production and consumption practices.

This collective work is a contribution to an analysis of historical pathways and the current state of agricultural innovation systems and policy in Latin America. It is the fruit of a two-year project (Polinco) on agricultural innovation policies in Latin America, conducted within the framework of a platform in partnership for research and training, Public Policy and Rural Development in Latin America (PP-AL).

New lines of research for a rethink of innovation systems in the field of agriculture in Latin America

The book Sistemas y políticas de innovación para el sector agropecuario en América Latina was presented at the closing seminar of the Polinco research project on agricultural innovation policy and systems in Latin America, held in Rio de Janeiro on 13 and 14 November 2019 and attended by 70 researchers and academics. New lines of research were pinpointed at the seminar for future research on the topic. They include working to understand the processes of convergence and divergence between countries and assessing innovation systems based on criteria that illustrate their efficacy and equity.

The need to embark upon a foresight study to rethink innovation systems in the light of the new issues facing agriculture in Latin America was also highlighted. In particular, those issues include the dismantling of policies in support of family farming in some countries, the growing use of digital technologies in production, the increased climate risks and the development of urban agriculture.
