Anthurium attacked by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae (Xad). @Isabelle ROBENE, CIRAD

There is no cure for the disease caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae (Xad) that affects anthurium and onions worldwide. Systematic tests are conducted for the pathogenic bacterium Xad in quarantine greenhouses when exchanging plant material. Specific international regulations are also in place.

The Cirad'Innov solution :

The new molecular diagnostic test developed is based on gene amplification, capable of detecting the bacterium.

  • The test is easy to use and is specific to pathogenic strains of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae. When used directly on a bacterial suspension, it can identify Xad strains from any world region affected by the disease.
  • The test is highly sensitive: it can detect the bacterium in plant tissues before disease symptoms appear.
  • The test can handle large numbers of samples rapidly. It is a particularly useful tool for screening large quantities of symptom-free plant material, for instance material on release from quarantine.

Features

Bacterial blight diagnostic test for use in Europe and all areas in which anthuriums are grown, introduction of plant material certification procedures.

  • Since 2010, this new sensitive, rapid diagnostic method has been the reference method recommended by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO).
  • In Réunion, anthurium growers can have the test carried out on imported seedlings by an approved laboratory.
  • The test has been available on the global market since 2011.
