Other Latin American and Caribbean regions

In a nutshell

In Latin America and the Caribbean, CIRAD has opted to base its operations on its longstanding expertise and partnerships, and is currently recentring its activities around shared regional priorities.

Research fields

In Mexico, central America and the Andean countries

  • stepping up work on ecologically intensive agriculture (agroforestry, cropping systems and agrifood systems, family agriculture, quality)
  • developing integrated pest and disease management methods
  • supporting changes in farming systems using methods and tools suitable for small-scale producers (management, negotiation, smallholder trials, participatory selection, etc)
  • improving product quality, notably in fruit, by developing new varieties and processing methods.

This research is being conducted in conjunction with national, regional and international bodies and the private sector.

In the Caribbean islands

  • developing food safety and quality

This work is backed up by facilities in the French West Indies.

In the Southern Cone countries

  • contributing to scientific excellence, the production of global public goods and the generation of knowledge that can rapidly be transferred to small- and medium-sized farms

These aims are shared with partners in Brazil in particular.
