04/01/2010 - Press release
The Markets, Organizations, Institutions and Operators' Strategies Joint Research Unit (UMR MOISA) and the Conseil National de l'Alimentation (CNA) are organizing a conference on 12 January in Montpellier (Montpellier SupAgro INRA Campus), entitled "Durabilité, Identité et Alimentation" (Sustainability, Identity and Food). In the morning, the conference will be preceded by an open public session organized by the CNA.
The latest food data issued by the Centre de recherche pour l’étude et l’observation des conditions de vie ( CREDOC), at the request of the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, clearly show that after 2008, a year of restrictions, consumers are once again keen to buy, but in a more meaningful way.
Ethical concerns are of increasing importance. Progress has been made on food quality and the guarantees concerning environmental protection, livestock farming conditions (animal welfare) and proximity to production sites. The 2009 CREDOC survey recorded a 4% increase in the proportion of consumers claiming to be prepared to pay more for products guaranteed to respect the environment and animal welfare. There was also a 2% increase as regards fair trade products.
A new consumption pattern is emerging: self-fulfilment through buying products that foster sustainable development.
Quite some agenda
After a morning during which the Conseil national de l’alimentation ( CNA) plenary meeting will for once be open to the public, there will be four talks, a debate with the audience, and a round table on this new consumption pattern.
The talks will be led by Damien Conaré, Editor-in-Chief of Courrier de la Planète :
