CIRAD and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) signed a general partnership agreement this friday 14 April, with a view to strengthening scientific partnerships within the French-speaking world in the fields of agricultural training and research.
The AUF centres its operations on promoting scientific expertise, identifying innovations, sharing good practice and building projects in partnership, for the benefit of and in conjunction with French-speaking higher education and research establishments.
CIRAD is tasked with contributing to sustainable development in tropical and Mediterranean regions through research and experimental operations, primarily in the fields of agriculture, food, the environment, and territorial management. It provides the scientific, economic and cultural communities concerned with scientific and technical information.
The question of training and capacity building is a political priority for developing countries. To come up with solutions, CIRAD is keen to establish long-term partnerships with higher education establishments in developing countries. In line with its membership of the French Agricultural, Veterinary and Forestry Institute (Agreenium), CIRAD wants to work with developing countries to build and roll out training products and intervention frameworks tailored to requirements . It will also be relying on the relations that will be established in Montpellier thanks to the granting of the I-Site label for the MUSE project (Montpellier University of Excellence) in which CIRAD is playing an active part, along with 18 other organizations.
The AUF is a strategic partner for CIRAD with a view to contributing to identifying and mobilizing French-speaking players who share its ambitions as regards training for, with and in the South.
AUF Rector Jean-Paul de Gaudemar and CIRAD President Managing Director Michel Eddi signed a general agreement in Paris this Friday 14 April, with a view to increasing their collaboration, notably:
The AUF helps structure and develop research within a national and international Framework, and supports the involvement of its members in this approach. Its partnership with CIRAD is one example of this.
"The university and research sectors are a major pool of skills and expertise. The AUF is keen to foster interactions between its members, universities and research organizations, and development players, in order to promote a joint response to the challenges they face", AUF Rector Jean-Paul de Gaudemar says.
"CIRAD's very diverse training operations serve to prepare for the research and research support policies of the future and build fruitful partnerships in order to implement those policies in France and in the southern countries with which we work, by reconciling immediate objectives and longer-term ambitions", CIRAD President Managing Director Michel Eddi, adds. "Those operations have now been broadened out and revitalized by the latest digital technologies, which should boost their impact."
