08/04/2011 - Press release
IFREMER, the IRD, INRA and CIRAD are participating in an event called "Un jardin en Outre-mer" ("an overseas garden", from Saturday 9 April to Sunday 8 May, 10 am to 7 pm (Jardin d’acclimatation - Paris).
"Un jardin en Outre-mer" is one of the key events planned for the Année des Outre-mer . For a month, the Jardin d’acclimatation will be dressed in the colours of the French overseas regions and be introducing visitors to their various aspects: culture, handicrafts, economy, tourisme, and the environment, among others.
The research sector will also be represented, with a zone shared by four organizations: IFREMER, the IRD, INRA and CIRAD. Through animated features, displays and videos, the zone will provide a lighthearted introduction to the research work being done overseas in the fields of living resources, sustainable development, food, agriculture and biodiversity.
A giant board game, memory tests and quizzes will enable young and old to learn about the wealth and potential of the French overseas regions. Information boards, slide shows and short videos will transport visitors to the heart of the research organizations' operations (agriculture in the West Indies, pearl farming in Polynesia, coral reefs, in New Caledonia, and so on), and teach them about the threats to the environment.
On 19 April at 5:30 pm, there will be a conference on the topic of the treasures of the French maritime area - IFREMER's activities and prospects in the French overseas regions, in the presence of Philippe Lemercier, IFREMER's Delegate General for such regions.
