Agreenium: research and higher education serving agriculture, food, animal health and the environment worldwide

17/06/2011 - Press release

The "Agreenium" consortium was founded in May 2009 with the shared goal of building a consolidated French agricultural and veterinary research and higher education capacity and promoting that capacity on an international level. To achieve that goal, the founder members of Agreenium are keen to pool their international relations expertise. INRA and CIRAD are paving the way for this, by setting up a Mutual International Relations Service (DRIM).

The Mutual International Relations Service (DRIM) will have four main tasks: overseas representation, greater participation in the global agricultural research system, reception of overseas delegations, and support for the establishment of bilateral and multilateral international partnerships.

The most obvious immediate changes in practical terms on a national level will be the setting up of a mutual service to receive overseas delegations, the centralization and guiding of requests from overseas partners (appraisals, exchanges, partnerships, etc), or advice on and support of overseas missions by members.

On an international level, INRA-CIRAD representatives and regional directors overseas will also become Agreenium representatives. This new accreditation will enable them to promote the French agricultural and veterinary research and higher education system as a whole, and monitor and pinpoint partnership or financial opportunities for all of Agreenium's members.

To enable Agreenium to fulfil these tasks, INRA is seconding the staff of its International Relations service. For its part, CIRAD is seconding, full-time or part-time, staff members from its Research and Strategy Office, notably its regional directors overseas, and its Higher Education and Training Coordinator. Twenty people have thus been seconded to Agreenium in one way or another, by INRA and CIRAD. For their part, the various agricultural and veterinary higher education establishments have committed to seconding the necessary staff members to head or conduct joint projects on an international level. For instance, Montpellier SupAgro has assigned one of its senior staff members part-time to support the establishment of Masters and PhD projects under the EU Erasmus Mundus programmes and is looking into the possibility of seconding members of its training design team to Agreenium.

Agreenium was founded by a decree dated 10 May 2009 from the Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Higher Education and Research, and Foreign and European Affairs, in the form of a public scientific cooperation organization (EPCS).

The six founder members of Agreenium are INRA, CIRAD, AgroParisTech, Agrocampus Ouest, Montpellier SupAgro and the Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire in Toulouse.

Agreenium has a mandate to build long-term cooperation projects involving some or all of its members, on a voluntary basis, while guaranteeing that each operator keeps its own responsibilities and status. This flexible way of working makes it possible to mobilize, long-term, the research, teaching, transfer and appraisal capacity of the various stakeholders in support of wide-ranging projects on an international scale.
Other research and higher education establishments in France and overseas may join Agreenium in future, as founder or associate members.
