19/11/2009 - Press release
An international conference on Knowledge-Based Management of Tropical Rainforests, co-organized by the Écosystèmes forestiers public interest group (GIP ECOFOR), INRA, CIRAD, the IRD, the CNRS, AgroParisTech and the University of Antilles-Guyane, is being held from 22 to 28 November in Cayenne (French Guiana).
Tropical rainforests, of which Amazonia is a prime example, play a major role in supplying goods and ecosystemic services for the benefit of various countries and of their people. They warrant specific attention in view of their exceptional biodiversity, the complex way in which they function, and the fact that they remain fragile in the face of various types of change, particularly climate change. Protecting and promoting tropical rainforests thus means getting to know their diversity and how they function better, with a view to their management.
In this light, the main aim of the international conference
is to discuss the main topics concerning tropical rainforests and provide participants with the overview required for rational management. It is intended for scientists, forest managers, professional leaders, associations, politicians, students and journalists interested in matters relating to forest ecosystems and tropical rainforest territories in Amazonia and other large tropical forests.
Scientific workshops
centring on key disciplines for understanding the economical, economic and human processes at play in tropical rainforests are also to be organized following the conference.
