A book about the flora of the main biotopes of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria in West and Northwest Africa, primarily intended for survey staff involved in locust control operations.
The desert locust is one of the main crop pests worldwide (more than 31 million km2 may be invaded at a time). The insect is totally adapted to the conditions in the hot deserts of the Old World.
Despite its small format, this lavishly illustrated book contains comprehensive information on the flora of the main biotopes of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria (Forskâl, 1775) in West and Northwest Africa. It is designed to provide survey staff involved in locust control operations with information of use in describing the state of the plant cover in the biotopes in which locust populations are found whose development and dynamics they need to assess and whose biological potential they need to determine. Knowing how to use floristic composition to identify the biotopes in which desert locusts are found is the cornerstone of any field observation campaign, hence of effective preventive control.
