GAMOUR: a sustainable solution to vegetable flies

18/11/2011 - Article

Stop using insecticides on vegetables! This is one of the solutions suggested by the GAMOUR project, whose closing seminar is being held from 21-24 November in Saint-Pierre. As part of a technical package, this is an effective solution to vegetable flies.

Chayotes, courgettes, cucumbers, pumpkins and other Cucurbitaceae suffer all year round from attacks by vegetable flies, which are public enemy number one for market gardeners in Réunion.

However, farmers now have an alternative to applying insecticides on their crops. It is a technical package developed by the GAMOUR (Gestion Agroécologique des MOUches à La Réunion) project, named SP5: S for Surveillance, P1 for Prophylaxie (prevention), P2 for Plantes-pièges (trap plants), P3 for Piégeage (trapping), P4 for Prédateurs et parasitoïdes (predators and parasitoids), and P5 for Pratiques agroécologiques (agro-ecological practices).

The farmers involved in the project who used the package considerably reduced the losses caused by vegetable flies, while also cutting their insecticide bills.
