Two new training courses in sustainable food production are to be launched in October in Montpellier. They are post-masters level courses, led by CIRAD and Montpellier SupAgro. They will propose an integrated approach to careers relating to rural development and the agrifood industry on an international level. The courses are supported by the Chair in World Food Systems approved recently by UNESCO and set up by Montpellier SupAgro and the members of Agropolis International, including CIRAD.
Global food systems are changing rapidly, and there are doubts about their sustainability. For stakeholders in such systems, it is crucial to be able to identify the most relevant innovations. The aim is to assess the different impact categories: on health, the environment, biodiversity, social inequalities, resilience in an unstable world, etc. It is also important to be able to measure these impacts, build prospective analysis capacity, determine the degree of globalization of such systems and implement new forms of public/private sector partnerships.
Training is essential in meeting these challenges.
Two new training courses will be on offer in Montpellier as of the third quarter of 2011 . One leads to a specialist engineering diploma in "Innovations in global agricultural and agrifood systems" (ISAM) . The other is a specialist Masters, approved by the Conférence des grandes écoles , enabling professionals to better understand, support and anticipate "Innovations and policies for sustainable food supplies" (IPAD) .
These courses, which were established and will be conducted with CIRAD, will take place at Montpellier SupAgro's Institut des régions chaudes, on the Lavalette campus in Montpellier. They are one of the main operations headed by the Chair in World Food Systems approved recently by UNESCO and set up by Montpellier SupAgro and the members of Agropolis International. The Chair is backed up by an international network ("Unitwin") of associated universities, within which there are plans for research, training and international cooperation, and debates between the scientific sector and society on food systems worldwide, and their sustainability.
