CIRAD is contributing to the G20 conference on agricultural research for development

09/09/2011 - Article

By underlining the importance of the global coordination of agronomic research for development, CIRAD has helped organise the G20 conference in Montpellier on 12 and 13 September 2011. The conference will give CIRAD the opportunity to share its innovative vision of a partnership based on the strengthening of national scientific cultures via priority research mechanisms.

The French presidency is hosting an inter-governmental conference on agricultural research for development in Montpellier on 12 and 13 September. The primary objective: promote scientific partnerships to serve world food security.

The conference will bring together political decision makers, important managers of agricultural research in the G20 countries and representatives of international organisations (FAO, World Bank, CGIAR, GFAR).

Building research capacity in least advanced countries

On this occasion, CIRAD will defend the case for the global management of agronomic research for development based on strategic intelligence that is developed and shared by all stakeholders. It will also propose contributing its services. The main idea is to strengthen research capacities in less developed countries so that scientific culture can play a leading role in terms of development. In addition to the aim of research for development is that of development through research. Thus CIRAD would like to share its partnership innovations with the G2O delegations, such as the establishment of priority research and training mechanisms in partnership.

The conference is organised locally by CRAI (the commission for international agricultural research), which is the consultative group that coordinates the French research organisations (CEMAGREF, CIRAD, INRA, IRD, Agreenium) and the ministries concerned (Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fishing, Rural Affairs and Territorial Development, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research).

Montpellier, a world-ranking centre of excellence for agricultural research

The conference is organised locally by CRAI (the commission for international agricultural research), which is the consultative group that coordinates the French research organisations (CEMAGREF, CIRAD, INRA, IRD, Agreenium) and the ministries concerned (Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fishing, Rural Affairs and Territorial Development, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research).

The Montpellier location is a logical choice following the first world conference on agricultural research, GCARD, which was held there in 2010. It is also a consequence of the decision to create the international organization CGIAR, whose headquarters have been based there since March 2011. These major events make the city of Montpellier a world-ranking centre of excellence in agronomic research.
