The winners of the Laboratories of Excellence (LabEx) call for submissions were announced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research on 25 March. CIRAD is a partner in four of them: Agro, NuMEV, CeMEB and CEBA.
The winning laboratories, which will take their place on the global stage, will be given the resources they need to place them on an equal footing with their foreign peers. The approach is also intended to attract internationally reputed researchers and teacher-researchers and build a top-level integrated research, education and promotion strategy.
CIRAD is a partner in four LabEx: Agro, CEBA, CeMEB and NuMEV.
Agro (Agronomy and sustainable development)
Aim: to respond to growing demand to grow crops for food and non-food purposes (notably biomaterials and bioenergy) and anticipate how agriculture in North and South will adapt to climate change.
CIRAD is heavily involved in this LabEx through nine research units:
AGAP,
AMAP,
BGPI,
BSEF,
GREEN,
MOISA,
RPB,
PVBMT,
SYSTEM.
Budget: 35 million euros over ten years
Lead organization:
Agropolis Fondation

CEBA (Centre d’Etude de la Biodiversité Amazonienne)
Aim: to study terrestrial biodiversity in French Guiana by identifying the historical, genetic and ecological factors that account for the wealth of that biodiversity and determine how it is organized, using scientifically advanced techniques.
CIRAD is involved in this LabEx through two research units: AMAP and ECOFOG.
Budget: 16.3 million euros over ten years
Lead organization:
University of French West Indies and French Guiana

CeMEB (Centre méditerranéen de l'environnement et de la biodiversité)
Aim: to understand the dynamics and functioning of biodiversity by combining observations, experiments and modelling; to forecast the biological consequences of global change with the help of scenarios; to anticipate the changes in ecological services and human societies.
CIRAD is involved in this LabEx through three research units:
AMAP,
CBGP,
Eco&sols.
Budget: 7,9 million euros over ten years
Lead organization:
University of Montpellier 2
NuMEV (Solutions Numériques, Matérielles et Modélisation pour l'environnement et le vivant)
Aim: to develop information and communication technologies for observing the environment and living organisms (designing sensors and building sensor networks, development of spatialization systems (drones, micro-satellites), data processing) and for sick or handicapped people (neuro-prosthetics, medical robots, "on-board" physiological sensors).
CIRAD has strong links with this LabEx via its AMAP research unit.
Lead organization: University of Montpellier 2
