Tropix 7.0

25/11/2011 - Article

A new version of the Tropix software, presenting the main technological characteristics of 245 tropical or temperate species. Tropix can be used for multi-criteria species searches, either based on pre-selected characteristics or by similarity to another species.

The new version of the Tropix software (version 7), developed by CIRAD, presents the main technological characteristics of 245 tropical or temperate species. In addition to new properties, compared with version 6, the new version has a completely new graphic interface, making it much more user-friendly.

For each of the species described, Tropix 7 gives access to the following data and information:

  • botanical and common names, provenance, possible commercial restrictions;
  • log characteristics, wood appearance, colour and macroscopic structure;
  • main physical and mechanical properties;
  • wood resistance to biological deterioration agents (fungi, termites, dry wood-eating insects), impregnability, use categories, possible preservation treatment recommendations according to use conditions;
  • wood drying performance (drying table provided for information);
  • wood sawing and milling performance, suitability for veneer production, joint strength;
  • commercial classification: sawn product appearance in line with the applicable regulations and visual structure classification;
  • main actual or potential uses, fire performance (as per French and EU standards);
  • comparative tables of the main technological characteristics.

Tropix 7 can be used to find species in two ways: based on one or more species descriptor(s) or by similarity to certain properties of another species.

It can also plot graphically each of the 245 species described in relation to the others, based on one or two physical or mechanical properties.

The technical descriptions of the species and the results of multi-criteria searches can be printed or downloaded in pdf format.
