A book for the general public, now available in e-book format, to help readers understand the agricultural realities at play in Algeria's vast Mitidja plain.
1987 was a major turning point in terms of State-owned agricultural land in Algeria. The extraordinary story of those areas began with the introduction of self-management (following independence). However, it will no doubt be a good few years before the whole of the story can be told.
This book has the advantage of raising a multitude of questions. Firstly, that of the human factor in the Mitidja. The example of tenant farmers is a striking one! Who are they? Where did they come from? What is their status? All these questions are very difficult to answer without a good deal of hard work. The existence of these tenants highlights the contradiction between the right to work on the land and the right to land in the Mitidja.
The book was written by a group of researchers who crisscrossed this legendary plain that is both very close to and very farm from Algiers. It contains eyewitness acounts from men and women living in the Mitidja, expert overv iews, a journalist's report and analyses by researchers.
The book is now available in e-book format
