A new educational booklet on foot-and-mouth disease, one of the most serious animal diseases, which affects cows, pigs, goats and sheep. Produced by the CIRAD Savoirs team, based on the points of view of the various stakeholders, including that of the virus and a cow!
Foot-and-mouth is one of the most feared trans-border diseases. It is very easily transmitted, and causes substantial economic losses. It affects cows, pigs, goats and sheep, and is endemic in around a hundred countries. There are many reasons why the spotlight is on foot-and-mouth, but the perception of the disease varies depending on whether a country is affected, and on the stakeholder concerned.
This booklet is a good illustration. In relation to the disease, it presents the points of view of livestock farmers, veterinary surgeons in North and South, and also journalists, economists and eventually, and more surpirisingly, a cow, the virus and the vaccine!
This educational booklet is the latest in CIRAD's "Les savoirs partagés" collection, and was published with the support of fourteen partner organizations, with a preface by the Director General of the World Organization for Animal Health. It provides easy access to the basics of this animal disease and enables readers to discover the complexity of the biological interactions involved and understand, in the light of current events, the economic impact of this health hazard on international trade in animals and animal products.
