The first statement adopted by the INRA-CIRAD joint ethical advisory committee for agronomic research focuses on food security and models of food consumption. It was adopted during the session on the 20th November 2009.
The continued poverty and lack of food security highlight the weaknesses of the current models used for food consumption. This also applies to rich countries. Development policies encourage productivity and ignore the negative impact. The international exchanges increase the dependence of southern countries on the world market. Such is the observation made by the INRA-CIRAD ethical committee in its recently published statement on food security and models of food consumption.
The committee calls for vigilance, particularly with regard to the diversity of food models and the study of the nutritional needs of the most disadvantaged groups, which are central to the issue. In terms of research work, it underlines the need to strengthen and promote the involvement of stakeholders in rural and urban societies in the different stages of the research processes. It also recommends supporting projects linked to the development of a discussion on their economic impact, their effect on ecosystems and ways to reduce waste. Lastly, according to the committee, research programmes should include a discussion on public food policies.

The statement adopted in the session on the 20th November consists of nine recommendations. It is based on the framework of principles set out by ethical committee and invites the research community to put questions of food security and models of consumption in their social, institutional and environmental context at different levels, particularly national and international.

The mission of the joint ethical advisory committee for agronomic research, created in October 2007 by CIRAD and INRA, is to discuss, advise, raise awareness and sound the alarm. It examines ethical questions raised by research activities and the research process in the field of agriculture, food, the environment and sustainable development, particularly those that concern the relationships between sciences and society.
