An information booklet containing the fundamentals and latest news on bluetongue, which originated in developing countries but has been affecting Europe since 2000.
Bluetongue is often seen in sheep flocks in Africa. However, it has regularly been seen on other continents in recent decades, and has been affecting Corsica since 2000 and the sheep and cattle production chains in several European countries since 2006.
If we are to control the disease in the areas where it is spreading and also in its zone of origin, it is vital that we get to know it better, but also that we inform others about it more. This was the idea behind an information booklet, which explains the fundamentals of this vector-borne virus and also what we can draw from the latest situation common to numerous countries. It also covers the international dimension and the southern origin of the disease. Lastly, it stresses the vital role to be played by the veterinary profession in terms of both early detection and mass vaccination campaigns.
The booklet is pocket-sized and easy to consult thanks to its many titles and subtitles, detailed list of contents and links. The main national and international websites are also listed under "Pour en savoir plus".
The booklet was devised, written and produced by CIRAD's Service d’appui à la valorisation de l’information sur la recherche scientifique (SAVOIRS), and is part of a collection, "Les savoirs partagés".
While CIRAD was behind the publication of the booklet, it was supported by eighteen national and international partners. More than forty researchers from CIRAD and partner organizations contributed to it.
