Preservation of woods

The CIRAD wood preservation laboratory assesses the natural durability of woods as regards termites and fungi, and develops new low environmental impact treatment products and processes.

It is involved in detecting, identifying and controlling attacks, and in testing the efficacy of fungicides and insecticides. It also advises on wood treatments. The laboratory has been engaged in a quality strategy for more than ten years, and has been accredited since 2006 by the Comité français d'accréditation (COFRAC, accreditation no. 1-1686), under standard NF EN ISO/IEC 17025.

Features

In 2010, the laboratory was accredited four eight tests relating to wood and wood product preservation, defined under the following standards:

  • wood preservatives - Test method for determining the protective effectiveness against wood destroying basidiomycetes - Determination of the toxic values (EN 113)
  • wood preservatives - Determination of toxic values against Reticulitermes species (European termites) - laboratory method (EN 117)
  • wood preservatives - Determination of preventive action against Reticulitermes species (European termites) - laboratory method (EN 118)
  • wood preservatives. Accelerated ageing of treated wood prior to biological testing. Evaporative ageing procedure (EN 73)
  • wood preservatives. Accelerated ageing of treated wood prior to biological testing. Leaching procedure (EN 84)
  • durability of wood and wood-based products. Wood-based panels. Method of test for determining the resistance against wood-destroying basidiomycetes (ENV 12038)
  • anti termite treatment products for floors, walls, foundations and masonry works. Accelerated ageing test of treated materials prior to biological testing. Percolation test (XP X 41-542)
  • determination of the effectiveness against termites of products and material used as barrier designed for ground and/or wall. Laboratory method (XP X 41-550)

Services

In addition to accredited tests, the laboratory also provides other services and technical advice:

  • tests of wood durability as regards termites and fungi
  • termite control: advice on selecting products and processes
  • identification of biological damage caused by fungi and wood-eating insects
  • training in wood durability and preservation, standard preservation tests and termite control.
